Converting vhdx to fixed from VMM2012R2 has generated a very strange error on vhdx

Hello,

For someone who can help me on this very strange issue:

Our environment: Hyper-V Cluster with hosts running w2012 R2, Virtual Machine Manager 2012 R2 to manage virtual environment, SAN storage that provide LUNs where CSVs are stored, and virtual machines running Windows 2008 R2.

Yesterday, a commont task such as converting vhdx to fixed from VMM2012R2, has generated an error on that vhdx that has put it completely unavailable. That are the steps were done:

- with the vm stopped, from VMM i edited the properties of one of the virtual disks connected to that machine, and selected to convert to fixed

- i started the proccess, the job began to do the task and about at 50% of the process the task ended in VMM with the error:

Error (2909) VMM cannot create the file C:\ClusterStorage\VolumeX\....\efpljdkr.vhdx because the file name already exists on the hyfbdst26.dmndst.loc server. Cannot create a file when that file already exists (0x800700B7)

- The VM was unavailable, only with the repair option active. I executed a repair with "ignore" option, and VMM returns the same error.

- In the LUN where de vhdx disk is stored, there was the temp file efpljdkr.vhdx created by VMM

- I deleted the temp file, i tried to repair again the VM with the "ignore" option and the VM became available again, but wen i started it the VM showed an error as the vhdx was inacessible.

The vhdx disk is stored on the lun but actually is unavailable: i have no permission to edit, rename, copy, show security acls, etc... despite of i am domain administrator. I can't view security properties of the file...

if i execute powershell command "Get-Acl name.vhdx" i obtain error: Access is denied.

I can not get ownership of the file. The file is completely isolated from somehow security reasons

Can anyone help me with this strange error please?

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

i have the following infrastructure

2 x Windows Server 2012 (R1) Cluster nodes

1 x Windows Server 2012 R2 iSCSI Storage Server

1 x virtual Server with SCCM R2 Virtual Machine Manger install

When i genereate a Logical Switch within the Virtual Machine Manger on Cluster Node 2 i get the following error message:

Error (2912)

An internal error has occurred trying to contact the server2.dom.int server: :w:InternalError: :MI RESULT 1:Es ist ein allgemeiner Fehler aufgetreten, für den kein spezifischerer Fehlercode verfügbar ist..

Recommended Action

Check that WS-Management service is installed and running on server server2.dom.int. For more information use the command "winrm helpmsg hresult". If server2.dom.int is a host/library/update server or a PXE server role then ensure that VMM agent is installed and running. Refer to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2742275for more Details.

on server1.dom.int it works fine.

I have 2 LUNs presented as CSV to my Hyper V Failover Cluster.
SSD and HDD.

I want to use differencing Disks for faster deployment.
In my VM Template the SSD Disks are target for the Diff Disk is selected.

But the Base Image will be copied to the HDD target.

Where can i change this?

SCVMM 2012 R2 - Template

Hi there,

When I Setup a template in SCVMM, is there an option is assign the virtual switch on the Network Adapter?

So when I deploy a VM from the current template, SCVMM would select the wrong Virtual Switch and I would have to manually go to the VM property and select the correct one.

Thanks in advance

VRRP/CARP broadcast in virtualized network

$

I am using SCVMM 2012 R2 and Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V hosts. I have 2 KEMP LoadMaster VMs running on same host and are trying to form HA pair. The way they form HA pair is to use VRRP to communicate to each other. It uses broadcast over 224.0.0.x IP address.

I have enabled Mac address spoofing on virtual switch but the VMs fail to create a pair. Looking at network captures, it seems that the multicast packets never gets to the other VM.

So the question is, does HNV/NVGRE networks allow multicast packets to broadcast to other VMs connected to same virtual network? Is there a way to configure virtual switches to allow multicast for VRRP?

IP pools and Guest profiles questions

$

Hi to all of you :)

I have one issue with IP pools during VM deployment via template.

Ill try to explain what seems to be a problem.  VM deployment is successfully finished and the IP is injected, and everything is OK.
I can see the IP from connection details, so the injecting process is functioning, but after a while (2-3 min) VM switches to DHCP IP configuration, and the IP address is revoked from IP pool, Also, in Hardware configuration, I can see that Ip address is set Dynamic IP. VM OS (Server 2012R2 Standard) is out of box installation, only updated, and no more configurations is done.

I recreated the VMs, changed the generations but its always the same.  I have latest role-up installed (3.2.8117.0)

Second thing in SCVMM 2012R2 is that when deploying VM from template, I cant select Guest OS profile, is this by design or I need to create VM template for each guest profile.

And the last thing, in VMM 2012 r2 hyperV replica is not supported right ?

thanks

iSCSI Fabric - Second "Host vNIC" not a valid iSCSI initiator address

$

Hey Everyone,

I am currently adding a SAN to our network infrastructure and I have noticed a issue with VMM (or with my configuration) and iSCSI.

The setup currently is as follows:

Cisco Nexus 1000V (3 network segments, 2 uplink profiles, 3 port-profiles)

SCVMM 2012 R2 (2 uplink profiles, 3 port-profiles, 3 segments/vm networks)

3 Hosts in a cluster, 2 management vnics per each host, one on the iSCSI segment, one on the mgmt segment, and both segments go through the same uplink profile (the second profile uplink profile is for the other two NIC dedicated to guest traffic only).

When I try to add a iSCSI array, I only see the "management segment" vnic (both vnics are configured and active, pinging between hosts on the separate vnics work as well as pinging the array on the iSCSI vnic).

When trying to add through the command line, it eventually errors with: "The IP address <x> is not a valid iSCSI initiator address for <y>.  Enter a valid IPV4 address of iSCSI host, and then try the operation again".

So, obviously, the first question is going to be, is the IP address valid?  As mentioned above, the address I am using is valid for that specific host and should work without any problems.

Thanks,

Dan

Audit - Who created/deleted the VM?

Hi,

Does anyone know or can point me to the correct direction on how I query who has created or deleted a VM?

The VM was created for quite some times (according to uptime), but I just couldn't query it from SCVMM console Jobs.

How long is the History of VM creation/deletion being kept?

Thank you in advanced!

I've created a VM template from a VM that was installed on the host. When trying to deploy a VM from this template it fails at 97% Customization Failed with the error  Error (609) Virtual Machine Manager cannot detect a heartbeat from the specified virtual machine. Either the virtual machine is not running or Virtual Machine Additions is not installed.  Recommended Action Verify the status of the virtual machine.

Guest OS Profile has the correct OS setup, no ISO remained on the template, virtual guest services were updated before creating the template.

Any ideas suggestion?

Using New-SCLoadBalancerVIP for Two Ports on the same VIP

Hello,

I am trying to alter a script based around this command to use the same VIP created for two ports. I have two nodes that I want to load balance through a F5 and using this same VIP and same IPs, but on two ports. I have tested that the F5 will allow this, but New-SCLoadBalancerVIP command errors and states that the VIP is in use.

Thanks in advance!

SCVMM 2012 SP1 Virtual Switch on Cluster Node Disappears

$

I have been running into an interesting but an alarming issue with virtual switches. I have recently built a 4 node Server 2012 Hyper-V failover cluster. I have built numerous 2008R2 and 2012 Hyper-V clusters before, so I am pretty familiar with the process. I have rebuilt my VMM due to software problems, and on this new cluster, I have configured the virtual switches with nic teaming on 2 of the virtual switches.

I have 4 clusters being managed by this VMM.. and this newly built cluster keeps losing all of the VMM virtual switch configurations, meaning if I go to properties on the problem host and click on virtual switches, its blank. Refresh host cluster flags all virtual machines in this cluster as "Unsupported Configuration," making the vm unmanageable via VMM.

Information (26844)
Virtual switch (Virtual Switch Name) is not highly available because the switch is not available in host (One of the Hyper-V Hosts).

Recommended Action

All virtual servers on that host still has connectivity, as all virtual switch configs are normal when looking at it with Hyper-V Manager or Failover Cluster Manager..

The workaround is to evacuate the host using Failover Cluster Manager and reboot the host. Then refresh the host. Then refresh the VM's. I cannot consider this a 'workaround' as I cannot be rebooting my hyper-V hosts every week.. and migrating virtual servers constantly just for this reason. (DPM backups have a FIT with csv's if it tries to backup a vm on a same csv as another vm thats being migrated.)

I have been wrestling with this problem for a few weeks now. The cluster has been slicked and completely rebuilt.. Still same problems. Has ANYONE else out there seen this issue? Does ANYONE out there suggest a way to go about further troubleshooting this issue?

Hello,

I tried to create a new Virtual Machine Network, first by using the GUI, but failed with error ID 27235. So I tried Powershell directly, using the following command:

New-SCVMNetwork -Name "VMN_DMZ_DA" -LogicalNetwork "LN_DMZ_DA" -IsolationType "NoIsolation"

and got the follwoing error:

New-SCVMNetwork : Method not found: 'System.Guid

Does anybody know a solution?

Hello Guys, good everning!

When I try to clone some VMs from my SCVMM 2012 R2 Update Rollup 3, I receive the following error:

Error (2904)

VMM could not find the specified path C:\ClusterStorage\Volume6\VM-01\ExportFolder\VM-01\Virtual Machines\5E7811C6-6C0B-4EFF-93E0-02C8CEDC5386.xml on the HYPER-V01.domain.local server.

Recommended Action
Ensure that you have specified a valid file name parameter, and then try the operation again.

Warning (10655)
Hardware changes while cloning a Hyper-V virtual machine, VMware virtual machine, or stored virtual machine are not supported and were ignored.

Recommended Action
Make any hardware changes to the virtual machine after the cloning operation is complete.

I noticed that the XML file is not there, and the ExportFolder is created automatically on the moment that the cloning process is iniciated.

On this same environmnet, some other VMs with the same configuration I can do the clone without no error.

Thanks again for the help of you!

Migrating VMs Between two Sites/Clusters

$

Hello

I'm in the Process of Migrating my VMs from Site A to Site B which are two different clusters but when I get to the Ratings/Explanation page I get a lot of errors. I'm looking things over this is what we have and please tell me if I'm missing something because the only Logical network we haven't created is a LM Network..

  1. Logical Networks has been created.
  2. 2x Uplink Port Profiles for each Site
  3. Logical Switch Contains Both Uplink Port Profiles and Virtual Ports High Bandwidth, Medium Bandwidth
  4. On the Host a Logical Switch has been added with 1 Virtual Network Adapter for Production

Do I need to add additional Virtual Network Adapters? I'm still doing bit of research and from what I've read from the E-Books there is examples of having multiple but i'm just not sure.

The Errors I'm getting are..

"The host does not have access to sufficient storage of the requested classification for one ore more virtual disks associated with virtual machine"

"No Available connection to selected VM Network can be found"

"The switch extension has reached maximum supported ports on this host"

"The Port profile has reached maximum supported ports on this host"

"There is no host NIC with required classification"

"Ports are not available for VM Subnet"

and I thought I could just change the VM network it was on to the destination but that's not the case here. Does anyone have any guidance?
