vmmservice crash 2012 Sp1 Ru2

VMMSERVICE crashes when attempting to delete a missing VM ... pretty sure this was not the case before RU2 ...  What a mess !  When using RDS in 2012 VM's get created and deleted  when creating or removing VM pools... this leaves a HUGE mess in SCVMM...  :(   Ideas ?

Move SCVMM database

Hi, I'm new to SCVMM and was wondering if anyone knew or of the resource on how to move the database from one server to another? 

 

Also, does anybody know if there is a way to convert from a SQL Express Database to a Full Blown SQL 2005 database?  For example, if you did a install of VMM on a single box with SQL Express and now you want to move the database portion to another server running SQL 2005, is that an available option.  I have dug around in the Administrator Console and do not see a place to change the settings...

Storage Array (EqualLogic) Status: Not Responding in VMM

We have a customer running SCVMM 2012 SP1, using 2 nodes and the underlying storage is an EqualLogic box.

Worked fine for a while, but a couple of weeks ago their SCVMM started complaining about failed jobs regarding the storage provider. The error message is:

Error (2912)
An internal error has occurred trying to contact the VP-SCVMM01.customer.local server: :a:DestinationUnreachable: :MI RESULT 6:The requested object could not be found..

Recommended Action
Check that WS-Management service is installed and running on server VP-SCVMM01.customer.local. For more information use the command "winrm helpmsg hresult". If VP-SCVMM01.customer.local is a host/library/update server or a PXE server role then ensure that VMM agent is installed and running.

The storage provider in SCVMM is listed as "not responding" as is the Array itself.

Anybody any idea to resolve this?

Only difference is that we didn't do any upgrade or change. Based on his comment I would like to remove the storage provider and re-add it but I want to make sure that removing it doesn't break anything for the LUN's or the fact they keep being presented to the hosts.

Migration from VMware to Hyper V

We are planning to migrate our virtual machines from ESX 3.5 and Virtual Centre 2.5 to Hyper v V3 on Hyper 2012 r2. The team brought in to complete this task was planning to use VMM 2012 SP1 and VMM 2012. VMM 2012 was to be the staging area to bring the VMDKs to VHD and then import again into VMM 2012 SP1 as VHDx. I have been advised that neither support Virtual Centre 2.5 and need a solution. I have looked into it and have identified that the  VMM 2008 SP1 supports Virtual Centre 2.5.

Can I replace the 2012 VMM machine with a VMM 2008 SP1 machine and continue as planned?

Doubt about Migrate Storage

Hello.

I build a new Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V Cluster and installed the VMM2012 R2 to manage.

In this cluster, we have 3 CSV disks (iSCSI Equallogic Storage).

I'm doing some tests in this cluster before it goes to production environment and realized that when I'm migrating storage from one virtual machine that is on one CSV volume to another CSV volume, the old directory of this virtual machine on the original CSV volume is held.

For example: Move a VM1 from CSV Volume1 to CSV Volume2

Before Migrate Storage:
VM1 is located on C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1\VM1 directory

After Migrate Storage:
VM1 is located on C:\ClusterStorage\Volume2\VM1 directory, but the directory VM1 is located on C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1\VM1 directory still exists.

Is this behavior normal?

How do I create a Logical Switch with a single physical NIC?

I'm trying to create a Logical Switch with a single physical NIC on the WS2012 host in VMM 2012 SP1. I've created a Fabric Logical Switch and used most of the material from the following blog (without the Teaming), but it fails when I attempt New Virtual Switch followed by New Logical Switch in Host Properties/Virtual Switches.

The error is: "VMM cannot create a virtual switch without any physical network adapters."

(The physical adapter is allocated to a Hyper-V Switch used with all the existing VMs)

Compliance scan fails

I have SCVMM 2012 R2 running on Windows Server 2012 R2; the host servers are 2012 R2 as well.  I have established a baseline and done compliance scans without issue in the past.  However, I have now added additional items into the baseline and now, after a long timeout period, get the following when I try to do a compliance scan on any host.

Error (2931)
VMM is unable to complete the request. The connection to the VMM agent on the virtualization server (host.domain.com) was lost.
Unknown error (0x80338029)

Recommended Action
Ensure that the Windows Remote Management (WS-Management) service and the VMM agent are installed and running and that a firewall is not blocking HTTPS traffic.

This can also happen due to DNS issues. Try and see if the server (host.domain.com) is reachable over the network and can be looked up in DNS. You can ping the virtualization server from VMM management server and make sure that the IP address returned matches the IP address locally obtained from the virtualization server.

If the error still persists, restart the virtualization server, and then try the operation again.

The firewall is disabled on the SCVMM server and the host servers.  I have verified there are no DNS issues and that WS-Management is running.  I have rebooted all servers.  I have even removed the baseline and created an entirely new baseline, but always get the same error.  Anyone seen this issue?

Rename vNics during bare metal deployment

Hi all!

I am deploying a cluster of Hyper-V hosts with VMM, each host with two vSwitches. The first vSwitch is intend for guest VMs and the second for host management, heartbeat and live migration (all vNics). I have configured IP-pools for the three vNics and technically it's all working like a charm. The issue I have concerns the actual day to day management in regards to monitoring which host has which IP. When running Get-SCIPAddress | Out-GridView it produces a list of all IPs "leased" from VMM, but I find it hard to see which host has the actual address for the heartbeat and Live migration vNics when looking at the description column. For the bare metal deployed hosts it the description shows the vSwitch name plus an incremental number and not the actual hostname of the host using that particular IP. 

Example: For host1 it would read "HostSwitch5" for the LiveMigration IP and "HostSwitch6" for the heartbeat IP.

If you have a great number of hosts and all of them show the same description it gets pretty confusing.

The management vNic IP shows the hostname for the host in the description column and I'd really like the other vNics to show the same. Maybe this has something to do with this being the only vNic configured with a gateway and DNS or something?

Now, I could use the AssignedToID column but that only outputs the host's GUID which (at least for me) is not "human readable" :) So, I'd like to change the description field of each IP to read the actual hostname of the host using it. Is this possible?

VM Size

1.Could we see the disk size and free space of each VM from VMM console? I only see “disk allocated column on VMM

If not, could use powershell to list this information?

2. Is it possible to give suggested setting value (memory, CPU) of each VM?

For example, initial memory size is 4G, but too small for this VM, so system would suggest increase it.

3.Sometimes when we delete VM, some VM configuration or files are not deleted. How do we clean this garbage? Thanks!

p2v problem with windows server 2000

Hello all!
I have a problem: I try to convert physical windows 2000 advanced server with sp4. I use SCVMM2008 installed on windows  server 2008 x64.
When I press "Scan System", I have an error: 

Agent installation failed on 10.13.5.1.

Try the operation again. If the problem persists, install the agent locally and then add the managed computer.

ID: 410

Details: Fatal error during installation (0x80070643)


and on the physical server I see, that agents is installed, but cannot start with "The Virtual Maschine Manager Agent service terminated with service-specific error 2147942421".

please help!

Import VM without export

If we did not do the export VM，is it possble for us to import it to the new host?

for exmaple, the host is down without any backup. Could we import vhd to new host by specifing the vhd location directly?

Deploy VMs with SCVMM 2012 R2 with Internet connection

Hello everyone,

I am trying to use SCVMM 2012 R2 to create a network that will eventually hold 2 clouds, but for the moment I can't seem to create the network and connect the VMs to the Internet.

My lab is this (all hosts are in a LAN, 192.168.0.0/24, gateway 192.168.0.1, and ONLY ONE NIC per HOST ):

1 host DC, DNS, SQL, SCVMM 2012 R2 (IP 192.168.0.8)

2 hosts with Hyper-V (IP 192.168.0.9 and 192.168.0.10)

I'm also planning to create some "virtual" networks for clustering and live migration, which will use the same physical NICs as the management network (since I have only one physical NIC per host).

Could you please give me a quick guide of how to set this up with SCVMM 2012 R2, so that I can take advantage of the new features (network virtualization, logical networks, logical switch) and for the VMs to be able to reach the Internet?!

Refresh Virtual Machine Job stuck in queue

I have several Jobs of type refresh Virtual Machine Properties, all for the same machine that are not running and I cannot cancel the jobs. The Machine is on and responding and can be managed by PowerShell through winrm. Any help would be appreciated.

Cannot get Guest Services to Start on Virtual Domain Controller

I'm running System Center 2012 SP1 Version 3.1.6018.0
Guests all run Server 2008R2 SP1

I'm having a weird issue when trying to install guests services on a domain controller. On all of the virtual machines of the host, when trying to deploy the guest agent, it fails on all machines with the same error:

Error (2940)
VMM is unable to complete the requested file transfer. The connection to the HTTP server XXXXXXX could not be established.
Unknown error (0x80072ee2)

Recommended Action
Ensure that the HTTP service and/or the agent on the machine powstorehv1.gicw.org are installed and running and that a firewall is not blocking HTTP/HTTPS traffic on the configured port.

I have confirmed that there is no firewall blocking the process so in order to bypass this, I decided to just install the guest agent manually. This worked on all of the virtual machines on the host except for the one that is a Domain Controller.

At the point when it tries to start the service it gives me the following error:

Service 'Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager Guest Agent' (ScvmmGuestService) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.

I have tried with and without UAC enabled and I always run the MSI from an elevated command prompt. I've tried with and without MSIEXEC as well. I have Enterprise and Domain Admin privileges as well and have even tried with the domain administrator account.

At this point I'm not sure why I do not have sufficient privileges to start the service on a Domain Controller but I do understand that permissions are different due to its nature.

Any ideas around this either by installing through SCVMM or manually? Thank you in advance for your time!

Add-in Installation on multiple VMM Console

Hello, 

I want to add my personalize screen and button on SCVMM 2012 R2 using Add-ins.

I read few forums and ppts for the start but stuck with a little problem. 

As far as I know about Add-in, it can be installed only on SCVMM Console. Correct me if I am wrong.

Is there any way by which Add-in can be installed on multiple SCVMM Client machines using SCVMM Server?

Hope anyone can give me a solution for that.

SCVMM Cloud Capacity Limitations don't match what OS reports

So, in SCVMM we're going to be using clouds to limit how much resources different business groups can consume. I've created a number of clouds, and when VMs are created within them, each cloud reports a "Utilization" in the overview pane, basically saying how much resources are being consumed by that cloud.

My plan was to divide our total capacity into clouds so that business owners could use automation to manage their own VMs, the problem is that as far as Storage Utilization goes the number that SCVMM has is not exactly what the OS is reporting. For example, a file is say, 60GB, but with compression, deduplication, or whatever else the "Size on disk" is substantially smaller than the "File Size". Whether it's because of this, block size, or anything else what this means is SCVMM is thinking we're running out of space much faster than we actually are. Is there a way to tell SCVMM to go off what the operating system is reporting the "size on disk" is, instead of what SCVMM things the size is?

The only current solution I can think of is to make the sum of my quota's or "cloud capacity" greater than what it physically is... which means if the difference between size on disk and size isn't consistent, I am going to run out of space.

VMM Library Hosted By a Cluster

So, we have a Hyper-V cluster running Server 2012 R2. We installed SCVMM and added the cluster. How, the Cluster is using a CSV to store virtual machines, which is running off a Storage Appliance the hosts are talking with via iSCSI. Everything is working great, but I've run into a problem, I want my VMM libraries to live on the Storage Appliance the cluster is using. Ideally, I'm wondering if there is a way to host a library share from a cluster? I'd like to create a LUN to store all my VM templates and have that LUN hosted by the cluster. I can create a LUN and assign it to a File Server role and share out the lun via UNC path, but what I'd really like is for that cluster name to be the VMM share, rather than installing the agent on a VM or something and then  having the VM act as a proxy. Realistically, if I'm deploying a VM from my library share that's on the same storage appliance as the host it's going to is using the fewer network hops between them the better since internally my cluster is all 10gigabit. How do I add a library share that's not an actual server, but just a UNC path from a LUN? I've added it for now as a UNC path through my VMM server, but I'm worried it's going through that machine to go back to the cluster.

I know that Ideally with an SMI or SMP the SCVMM could probably use sancopy, how would that setup work though? Would I need to create a dummy VM and use iSCSI to connect it to a LUN, and then no traffic would actually go over iSCSI because it would just use SAN copy as long as my storage appliace is capable of SAN copy?
